I’m learning how to sew this year. {Here’s my post about my first steps in sewing, the tools you’ll need and a lot of resources} I needed a home for all of my pins and needles, and I tried to document every step of making this pretty pin cushion so that this tutorial is great for other sewing beginners. I hope you’ll like it – and please feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

you'll need http://kathastrophal.de | easy Pin Cushion DIY Tutorial {Sew Sew Pretty!}You can substitute the cotton wool for a filling material of your choice. On top of that: scissors, paper, sewing pins, needles and thread & your sewing machine [but you could probably sew this by hand as well].
step by step
schritt für schritt
http://kathastrophal.de | easy Pin Cushion DIY Tutorial {Sew Sew Pretty!}
01. Cut out two circles in your desired diameter. Cut the second circle into six parts. 02. Draw and cut out a circle… 03. … and the six triangles from the fabric with some seam allowance. 04. Then start sewing the triangles together, right side on right side. Use a shortened stitch length. At this point I realized that I’m sewing the symbol for nuclear power – which isn’t necessarly what I’m looking for in a pin cushion. But if that’s your thing, carry on! I just added some blue to the mix.

05. Keep on sewing the triangles together. 06. Keep going until you finish the circle. 07. Now join your two circles, right side on right side… 08. … and pin them together.
05. Immer weiter die Dreiecke zusammennähen. 06. 07. Jetzt beide Kreise rechts auf rechts aufeinander legen… 08. … und feststecken.

09. Now sew the circles together, leaving a small opening. 10. It should look similar to this. 11. You can now cut a little bit off the seam allowance. 12. Turn your circle to the right side.
10. Das Ganze sollte dann in etwa so aussehen. 11. Jetzt ein wenig von der Nahtzugabe abschneiden. 12.

13. Stuff the pin cushion with cotton wool. It will probably need more filling material than you expect, so add some more. 14. Hand-sew the pin cushion close. As you can see, my center is far from perfect – but we won’t see any of that once we add that button. 15. User the backer’s twine and stitch repeatedly through the center of the pin cushion, forming sections where the triangles touch. Pull tightly! 16. And finally, sew on a button on the top and the bottom in the center of your pin cushion.
13. Das Nadelkissen mit der Watte ausstopfen. Dabei braucht man grundsätzlich mehr Watte als erwartet – also weiterstopfen. 14.

And you’re done! Meet the new, pretty home of your sewing pins and needles! [By the way, the other side is also pretty – but my pictures aren’t, so you’ll just have to trust my word… ]
Tada, fertig! Also musst du mir da mal vertrauen… ]
Have fun sewing! I’d love to see your results!

One of my goals for this year was to learn how to sew. I bought a sewing machine in January and started to use it in March – and I already love sewing so much! I decided to also blog about my sewing adventures. In this post, I will talk about my very first sewing projects and hopefully provide valuable information for other sewing beginners.

These are the tools I believe every sewing beginner needs:
  • a sewing machine – I bought mine at a discounter for 90€ and I’m super happy with it! In the beginning, you’ll mainly need a straight stitch and a zig-zag stitch with different stitch lengths.
  • fabric scissors
  • threads and bobbins – black & white thread is a good start. Then you can buy colourful thread to match your projects.
  • sewing pins
  • a flat iron – I actually didn’t own a flat iron before I started sewing – but it definitely makes sewing so much easier when everything you fold stays in place.
  • measuring tools
  • a seam ripper – because mistakes happen and this makes them hurt a little less.

For my very first sewing project, I made cloth napkins. I love that they’re reusable and that they dress up our table. This project involved the zig-zag stitch and a lot of ironing.

One of the main reasons I wanted to learn how to sew is that I want to be able to customize and make my own clothes. I bought this scarf at a flea market and realized that I would love it a lot more if it was a circle scarf – so I just sewed the ends together. So quick & easy!

I knew that Alegra loved this fabric, so I decided to sew a bag for her. It took some time and also involed quite a bit of ironing – and I’m super happy with the result!

Home Ec is an online sewing course for beginners, taught by Leigh-Ann Keffer (of Freckled Nest), Rachel Denbow (of Smile and Wave) and Courtney Tucker. When I posted a picture of me and my sewing machine on Instagram, LA was so kind to give me access to the eCourse! I’m super thankful for this and it motivated me a lot more to really get started. There are plenty of tips and videos and 28 tutorials with lots of pictures (you can view the course outline here). I’m a very visual learner and I think that the tutorials are very easy to follow because of all the pictures. The cloth napkins and the grocery bag are both tutorials from this course and I plan on doing a lot more of them! Thanks for creating these great instructions and giving me so much motivation, ladies! :]

Shopping for fabrics can get a little bit overwhelming! Here are some places where you can find great fabrics: ♥ Your local fabric store. I love browsing the sale section! ♥ Etsy. There are some great finds in the supplies section. ♥ Flea Markets & Thrift Stores. Don’t be afraid to buy secondhand! You can also find vintage clothes, sheets or pillowcases that you can turn into something new and pretty. ♥ Ikea. Our Ikea has a great fabric selection and also sells fabric remnants for very little money. ♥ Onlineshops. Here in Germany, I love the selection at stoffe.de and Buttinette.
