I turned 25 yesterday. Twenty-five! That’s a quarter of a century. It’s so crazy to know that I’ve been on this earth for such a long time.
Fifteen years ago, I thought I would live the absolute dream right now: I’d stay up past midnight every night. Eat chocolate for every meal. Watch as much tv as I want. Never listen to what any adult has to say. Ten years ago, I believed that I’d have everything figured out by now: A real, grown-up job and real, grown-up money. Travel the world. I wanted to be married to the love of my life. Maybe have a cute baby or 10. And most of all – finally know what I want.
I guess 10 and 15-year-old me would both be disappointed in their 25-year-old version. I don’t even own a tv. My parents still give me advice for important decisions – and I value their opinion. Sven recently said that the only time I’m not tired is when I sleep. Chocolate doesn’t taste that good when you never taste anything else. I haven’t been to all the countries and cities I dreamed of. I still haven’t figured this marriage / children / real job – thing out.. I don’t even know if I want all of these. If anything, I’ve only become more indecisive.
What I do know though is that I’ve become a stronger person and that I like this strength. I’ve been through heartache, I had friends disappoint me – but I’ve also been in love and realised who my real friends are. I’m still not sure where my life will take me… but I learned that I don’t have to know and plan everything. I’m a overthinker by nature, but I’m trying my best to live in the present, not in the past or in the future.

Gestern bin ich 25 geworden. Fünfundzwanzig! Das ist ein Vierteljahrhundert. Kaum zu glauben, dass ich schon so lange auf dieser Welt weile.
Vor fünfzehn Jahren habe ich gedacht, dass ich jetzt ein Traumleben hätte: Jeden Abend bis nach Mitternacht auf bleiben. Nur noch Schokolade essen. So viel fernsehen wie ich will. Niemals mehr darauf hören müssen, was die Erwachsenen sagen. Vor zehn Jahren glaubte ich, dass ich jetzt alle wichtigen Punkte abgehakt hätte und wüsste, wie das Leben läuft: Ein richtiger Erwachsenen-Job mit richtigem Erwachsenengeld. Die ganze Welt bereist. Mit der Liebe meines Lebens verheiratet sein. Vielleicht noch ein bis zehn süße kleine Babies. Und vor allem: Wissen was ich will.
Die 10- und 15-jährige Katha wären wohl ziemlich enttäuscht, wenn sie ihre 25-jährige Version jetzt sehen könnten. Ich habe noch nichtmal einen Fernseher. Von meinen Eltern hole ich mir gerne Rat vor wichtigen Entscheidungen und berücksichtige ihre Meinung. Sven hat vor kurzem treffenderweise festgestellt, dass ich nur dann nicht müde bin, wenn ich schlafe. Schokolade schmeckt gar nicht mehr so toll, wenn man keinerlei Abwechslung hat. Ich habe noch längst nicht alle Länder und Städte bereist, die ich sehen möchte. Für das ganze Heiraten / Kinder / richtiger Job – Ding hab ich immer noch keinen Masterplan entwickelt. Ich bin mir gar nicht so sicher, wann und ob ich das alles will. Mir fällt es eher schwerer als leichter, Entscheidungen zu treffen.
Was ich aber weiß, ist dass ich stärker geworden bin und dass mir diese Stärke gefällt. Mein Herz wurde schon gebrochen und Menschen haben mich enttäuscht – aber ich habe mich auch verliebt und wahre Freunde an Orten gefunden, an denen ich sie gar nicht vermutet hätte. Ich weiß noch überhaupt nicht, wohin meine Reise gehen wird… aber ich habe gelernt, dass ich nicht immer alles planen und wissen muss. Von Natur aus bin ich jemand, der viel zu viel grübelt, aber ich gebe mein bestes um in der Gegenwart zu leben und nicht in Vergangenheit oder Zukunft.

All in all, I’m quite content at the moment. Yesterday was lovely, I got to spend my birthday with a lot of my close friends and received a lot of calls and messages. Sven surprised me with a trip to the North Sea in september, and my mum sent me a whole cake!

Insgesamt bin ich im Moment sehr zufrieden. Gestern war ein schöner Tag, ich konnte meinen Geburtstag mit einigen meiner liebsten Freunde verbringen und habe ganz viele Nachrichten und Anrufe erhalten. Sven hat mich mit einer Nordsee-Reise im September überrascht, und meine Mama hat mir einen ganzen Kuchen geschickt!
